Marriage

Marriage to George Williamson District 575 1980 Entry 53

Shared note

George Williamson was the third son of Peter and Annie. During his early years of marriage he played the piano at various dance halls throughout Glasgow. This was a part-time occupation, his main employment being a furniture salesman. He did not do any military service due to poor eyesight. A family story has been passed down the generations that his father knew George would make a poor soldier and destoyed his call up papers for serving during WWII, and as a result was not persued for active service. He could be a difficult husband and father, and did not cope well with the family finances, although never getting into any serious debt. Helen (Ella), his wife had an affair about 6 years into their marriage which resulted in the family splitting up with the two eldest sons, David and Leslie going to live with their paternal grandparents, and Gordon and Brian, the two youngest were taken into care at Quarriers homes. The split lasted about 6 months and through the efforts of both sets of parents George agreed to bring the family back together. George never really forgave Ella, for her infidelity and the 4 sons later felt that George did not believe that Gordon was his natural son, and would always pick on him and blame him for most of the misdemeanors that happened in the family home. In Gordon's later years he was very like George in facial features dispelling any possibility of being the offspring of anybody else. He worked as a funiture salesman in various department stores in Glasgow from circa 1950 to around 1975. He then had a short period of 2 years as a self employed agent selling occasional furniture and telephone seats in particular. He was never confident of maintaining an income from self employment and became a travelling salesman selling beds for a company called Slumber. The company was owned by a George Pearson who became a close friend and George Pearson, George and his son Leslie would follow their local football team, Third Lanark all over Scotland. Slumber slowly declined in fortunes and George moved home to East Kilbride and took a lowly position as an architect's clerk with East Kilbride Development Corporation. EKDC as it became known was developing East Kilbride as a new town, accomodating Glaswegians who wanted a better life and cleaner environment. This brought a need to find new industries to give work to the population, and it had been noticed that George showed potential as someone who could attract companies to locate and invest in East Kilbride. He accepted a new post as a Industry Development Officer, his natural selling talent showed through, and he was highly successful in bringing many large companies to East Kilbride. The pinnacle of his career was bringing the American electonics company Motorola to East Kilbride, who became the town's largest employer employing in excess of 1,000 people. After about 7 years he was head hunted by Scottish Enterprise, the main Scottish government body for attracting industry to Scotland. It has to be said that he had limited success in this post. Almost 15 years after the death of his wife Ella he remarried Betty Thomson (nee Liddell), a widow and they enjoyed 15 years of a happy marrige together before Betty died from Alzheimer's disease. George died 8 years later from the same disease.
